The opening part of the Commination, which forms the rest of the service, was added in the Prayer Book.

The service is appointed to be said immediately after the Litany. The service was revised in the Prayer Book and the language altered.

The Commination is a service that has been subject to misinterpretation and misunderstanding. Throughout each Lent, the congregation I serve in central Illinois turns to page in Lutheran Service Book during our midweek services and many of our Holy Week services, and we together pray the Litany.

This responsive prayer provides a structured, restful, comprehensive set of petitions that are prayed by alternating statements and responses of a liturgist and the congregation. It is taken from An American Prayer Book () and is a modern English adaptation of 'A Commination' from the Elizabethan Prayer Book and the Restoration Prayer Book.

This service may be used after Morning or Evening Prayer, or after the Litany if the Litany follows Morning or Evening Prayer. It is not listed in David Griffiths' Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer, but is quite similar to hisprinted in That book (and presumably this one also) was translated by a committee headed by the Rev.

(Joseph Light) Wyatt, and was likely based on previous translations by his father-in-law, Bp. It included an exhortation on God's judgment, the solemn cursing of those who have committed various sins, Ps 51, suffrages, and a collect.

It has remained in the English Prayer Book, but is not in the English Alternative Service Book. The American Prayer Book never included it. Ps 51 is the only feature of the commination service that is used in the Prayer Book service for Ash Wednesday.

The Prayer Book Society, set up 44 years ago to encourage rediscovery and use of the majesty and spiritual depth of the Book of Common Prayer at the heart of the Church of England’s worship, has welcomed the decision of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, to use the little-known Commination service from the Book of Common Prayer during a service on Ash Wednesday.

This Service Book includes the daily offices of Matins and Vespers, the Eucharistic Liturgies, and the sacra-mental rites, as well as devotional materials approved for use within the Archdiocese by Western Rite Orthodox congregations. There are two forms of the Divine Liturgy.
